Launching Pro Photo Remote Order Entry System

The Software is a Java-based application that runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It offers the user the ability to select a defined product and precisely define crops and rotations on their images within that product. The user simply chooses a folder of images and starts selecting from among Pro Photo’s products in which to put them.

Once the desired crop is achieved, the item can be added to the current order and a new product started. Multiple image thumbnails can be dragged or double-clicked to add several images to the order quickly. Advanced features such as arbitrary rotation, auto rotate, and fit are easily selectable in multiple ways, accommodating various studio work styles and equipment. Holding crop, options, and quantity between images of the same size allow studios to quickly process sets of similar images.

The software interface offers flexibility in work methods, allowing print sizes to be selected from a hierarchical menu or tabs, and the common tools to be shown at one time or associated with their related options. Once the order is composed, the user can review the items and add any options to individual sizes, images, or the entire order, based on the lab configuration.

Options can have text, quantities, or files added to them, ensuring that a lab can offer most of their products and abilities digitally. Tiered pricing and variable identifier options allow the Client to generate order files that take advantage of lab billing systems and conventions.

The new software offers a new order queue & upload manager with automatic retry if an order upload fails. It also has a scheduled send so photographers can create orders & upload at a specified time. Other new features include a new "Link" item in the catalog, which reduces lab setup time by pointing to another product, as well as improved startup speed.

ADD-ON MODULES

THE PRESENTER

The Presenter is a must have for studio customers to aid in sales presentations to their clients, offering side-by-side image comparison, image sorting, rendering of products for web use, and a slide show with optional music. The Presenter is Java application launched from within the Software.

THE PACKAGER

The Packager allows the photographer to define their own packages from the products offered by Pro Photo Imaging - perfect for studio, school, and sports pictures. The Packager runs as an additional floating palette space within the Software. Photographers can create various package groups, then create packages by dragging products from your Catalog palette into the My Packages palette.

THE PAGER – NEWEST ADD-ON MODULE!

THE PAGER is our newest add-on module for use by the studio in the Software. This powerful new tool will allow your customers to completely modify products specified by the lab – nodes can be moved, added, deleted, resized, or rotated and set to accept images, text, or backgrounds the photographer would like to add! The ability to add text colors, image opacity, drop shadows and grid constraints will give your customers the freedom to create their own unique products.

Image strokes (shown below) and fill colors can be added automatically via a color scheme and size selection window. Any new products created in the Client can be stored locally for future use. The Software automatically converts the new products’ attributes into job text that will be read into DP2 when the order arrives at the lab.

Frequently Asked Questions – Software

What are the system requirements to run the Software?

You should have a minimum 500MHz speed processor with 256MB RAM and the latest Java Runtime loaded from Sun. Any Java capable system can be used, so Apple OS X 10.3 or higher, Linux, and all current versions of Windows will support the application. Be sure to maintain enough free drive space to build, save, and retain order files.

What characters cannot be used in image file names?

Kodak’s DP2 software will refuse certain characters, and while we filter most out in the Software, it’s still best to not use apostrophes, commas, slashes or ampersands in image file names.

Can I use tiff images with the Software, or just jpeg’s?

Pro Photo Imaging has the option of allowing the Software to accept tiff files. Please contact Pro Photo Imaging to check their policy; if they wish to add this ability we can do it quickly.

I am seeing some images in the Software turn dark, red, or not appearing at all when trying to put them into a product - what causes this?

Different cameras and their image extraction software will occasionally embed non-RGB color spaces (like CMYK or proprietary ones) or add EXIF header data. In these cases, while the thumbnails appear fine, Java is unable to render the full image into a product - they will appear darkened, hued, or not render at all. Converting these images to RGB in Photoshop and/or removing the EXIF header data will allow the image to be rendered in a product.

Sun Microsystems's versatile Java Web Start mechanism helps ensure that users always have the latest features. The application is digitally signed, ensuring that the downloaded application hasn't been tampered with. This mechanism offers the ease of access of a web page, and the rich capabilities and integration of a true desktop application.

After the initial Java install of about 15MB (distributable via CD), the application download is about half a MB, preventing the need for long download times for each application update.

Labs with large product listings can zip their templates file, further decreasing the time needed for studios to download and get started.

The ROES Client can be used at a photo shoot in offline mode. It caches the lab graphics and templates files so the offline experience is identical to being online. Orders can be created and queued to send as a batch when a connection becomes available, or saved locally to be burned to CD or DVD.

The order queue is also useful in online mode, where orders can be queued and sent in the background while new orders are being created.

An order history is kept for as long as the studio desires, ensuring that if a network problem or other outage occurs, the order can simply be re-sent without losing any data.
